Post image for Antique Black or White??? Help Me Decide!!! (Vlog)

My therapy is painting! I love, love, love it! It was a beautiful day on Saturday and I finally got to get a brush out and crack open a can! Ah the smell! This piece is not mine, but I volunteered {because I have nothing else to do right?} to paint it to look like a media cabinet you might find in the ever popular Ballard Designs catalog.

Here is where I need your help! The original plan is Antique Black. I plan to paint three layers of Cameo White (Benjamin Moore color) and then 2 coats of black and distress the edges so the Cameo White will show through.

Antique Black?

But, a little piece of me is saying go with Cameo White and then distress and glaze with chocolate brown glaze!

Antique White?

HELP! The owners of the cabinet are trusting me! So, what do you think??? Black or Cameo White?
{note: it is going in a very small room, wall color latte, black TV on top}

I’m torn….depends on the room. However, black is easier to keep clean from little fingers and hands which is a plus for me. Also, our rental house has lots of white white walls and our black cabinet really anchors the space.

I love the Ballard Designs black…but like Rachel says, you need the room to be able to support black as such a dominant color. When you are done there, will you come down here?? :D I could give you all the therapy opportunities you could ever want!! I will look for the “after” pics! I know whatever you do will be awesome.

I’m voting for the white – especially with todays current trends to lighter and more neutral colors – the black might be old in a couple of years…. I do love black for the drama though! It’s a hard choice!
Good luck. Can’t wait to see the finished product!

I work at Ballard and a lot of our black finishes have a really cool RED underneath. It sounds crazy, but it looks great peaking out under the Black.

I like the Black because I think it helps minimize the impact of the giant black screen that sits on top of it. It sort of all melds into one piece when they are both black.

Black…especially if it is going in your family room. you have the white built-ins in there and i think the antique white might look out of place. unless you are therapeutically going to distress and antique your built-ins…which is always an option! there’s my 2 cents! now have fun!

I agree that it does depend on the room! Does the room have lighter, more neutral colors? Are the walls light or dark? I would go with something that will contrast against the walls. If the room is small, I would probably go with the white because the black could be overwhelming in a smaller area.

I vote for black. With the latte walls the black will be a nice contrast. I think it will give balance to the room. Of course, it also depends on the color of the sofa and such. If they are light colored then for sure black.
