Inspired by Board and Batten!

before shot of hallway

When you enter my home from the garage entry I have a long hall. The laundry room is on the right. I’ve done and redone this hallway several times. In the preschool days I painted 6 layers of magnet paint covered with chalkboard paint. I could adhere all the artwork via magnets and they could doodle all over the wall. I got sick of the dust and painted over it awhile back.

step 1

step 1

My next plan….Board and Batten! That plan entered my brain quite awhile ago when I first saw it popping up all over Blog Land. Well, I finally got the job done. This is not a tutorial. I’ll show you the first step….because that is all I have a picture of! I just got busy with the project and did not take any! {To make matters worse I dropped my camera when taking the final after pictures and it has gone to its grave.  I’m am cameraless!}

I painted the 2/3 of the hallway with Sherwin Williams Super Paint White Semi Gloss. I figured the wall was going to take some serious abuse so I need all the protection and washability I could get. Also, let me add that those plastic pour containers with the lid that screws back on are GONE! What a great idea at first. I can’t tell you how many times I could not get those lids off when I wanted to paint. I would just keep trying until I got it, but I would get soooo frustrated. Maybe it was because I was lazy and did not clean the paint off the rim before I shut it. Oh well, just glad the old can is back!

The After

The After

I got the guy at Lowes to cut all my boards. I’m sure he was cussing me under my breath when I left too! I did help him measure everything out and mark it. My neighbor pointed out that I was quite rude for not tipping him. Honestly the thought really did not cross my mind. In my mind he was just doing his job. {of course I had no cash anyway} Feedback here…would you have tipped him? Because I will be going back on my next project. Do I need to switch to Home Depot in case I am recognized as the loser who did not tip?

Love the 3 prong hooks

Love the 3 prong hooks

I got these great 3 prong hooks from Home Depot for $3.23 each! I love them because they give you 3 hooks in one to hang stuff on. Each boy can hang their backpack, jacket and hat! Hopefully they will hang these items up!

Adding a little bling

Adding a little bling

I wanted a coastal feel {really I just want to move to the beach!} when you first walk into the house. On my recent trip to the Outer Banks I got some great starfish at one of my favorite stores, The Cottage Shop.

Driftwood!

Driftwood!

I also got this great piece of driftwood from the beach!

A hook for everyone

A hook for everyone

Here is another view. It is very difficult to get a good picture because it is a hallway. I had a blast doing this project. I made a few mistakes and learned a few new things. I used a nailgun for the first time {loved it} and found out I’m a pretty good calker!

This look is very addicting as well! I’m thinking about tackling my master bedroom next!

All in all it was relatively cheap to do as well.  The board I cut up was $24 and I sill have 1/2 left.  The hooks were $3.23 each.  The starfish were $12 and I had the rest!

Please leave me a comment if you have any specific questions about the project and I will get right back to you!

I’m linking this project up with Melissa at The Inspired Room! She is so inspiring! Check out her Friday Linky Day!

Great job. It adds so much character to the hallway. Good idea about priming and painting the wall first. I put up all my boards and then did that part, not so much fun. Anyway, it looks great!

It looks fabulous. You know, I just painted some walls in a well used hall that are already getting dinged up just weeks later! Good thinking on making them more heavy duty to stand the abuse. I’m gonna have to try something else! Yours is ADORABLE! Wanna come over and do that for my hall?

I’ve never thought that I should or would tip a person in a Lowes or Home Depot and I’m known to over tip every where. Waiting to see what others say about this on your blog. You did a great job and have inspired me to get busy.

Your hall looks great! I love your added bling with the starfish. I’ve just redone my master bedroom using board and batten. You can see the finished room on my blog. Have a great weekend!

Your wall looks great! and it’s very practical, too. As far as tipping the guy at Lowe’s… I don’t think so!

What a great idea! And it looks terrific! No need to tip the guy at Lowe’s. It’s his job and who has money for that these days?

I love the way you hall turned out. What a great idea. I’d rather live at the beach as well but MN is a long way from either coast (sigh)! No need to tip the guy at Lowe’s, it’s his job.

Beautiful!! I love the starfish.

Your hallway looks fabulous and I so understand your wanting to live at the beach. I used to live just a few minutes away from one and miss it now that we’ve moved hundreds of miles away.
As others have mentioned it isn’t necessary to tip the guy at Lowe’s.
It might be nice however to let management know how much you appreciate the service, provided of course that the guy was friendly and courteous.
If he wasn’t, they should probably know that too, but I’d likely just shop somewhere else.

Hi MJ – I’m in love with your hallway! Wait – first – the chalkboard wall was a big pain in the butt? I was going to do a whole wall in my next house but never really considered the dust factor. I am planning on doing board and batten already but love how you have used it for hooks with that horizontal board for the hooks. And your wall color above – love – do you recall the color? Okay forget all of this, can I just move my family in with you instead of doing this myself???

Wow, I just love your version of the B&B. I’m debating on where I can use this idea, but I love how you did it in a hallway. Not sure I really want to tackle a whole bedroom, but this is great!

YEA, MJ – this looks fabulous. I want to tackle it in our great room but it would be a huge job since it’s a HUGE room. Not up to the task yet. :)

so cute! I love the wall treatment. I keep staring at my ginormous living room walls thinking that the batten board treatment would cinch up the difference! I may have to give it a shot!
BTW, I have a secret desire to own a nail gun too. ;)

I love your room… I am off today to get my supplies to tackle my master bedroom… little nervous about the semi gloss paint on the walls… I really like the moldings you used across the top… It looks like 3 different pieces… Would you share that info??? I would never tip the guy a Lowes… that is his job, they offer that as a service.

Love your mudroom! Especially the board and batten. I used a similar technique at the end of June to make my son’s closet into a reading nook. I didn’t tip the guy because I did most of my own cuts. Normally I only have them cut a big sheet of plywood down for me and that is it so no tip. I guess if there were a lot of cuts you could tip. But, hey, isn’t that what they are paid for???

Anyway, saw you linked up to at TLC, too. Thanks for sharing!!!

I LOVE your hallway re-do as the coastal feel is something I am aiming for now too!

The hooks really are great – do your boys actually use them? (I’ve a boy myself and I’m sure the novelty of his own hook would wear off after a couple of days).

Anyways, I think I may have to try this on our master bedroom….it looks fantastic!

Cheers,

Sandra

What a beautiful transformation, it looks gorgeous. As for the tip, I had a friend who worked at HD, and the are not allowed to accept tips. So even if you offered, he couldn’t accept.

First – LOVE IT. abso-freakin-lutely LOVE it. as far as the tip thing – HD did our hard cuts for our subway tile backsplash at our old house – and Vance tried to tip – like had the money in his hand pushing it at him and the guy very politely, but firmly, said no, it was his job. Which i thought was nice but felt the store should let him have tips.

Beautiful! I’m in love with the coastal look. Way to go!!! And as for the tip, I say, “no.” I like to smile & thank them lots, though:)

You should come by my linky party on Monday “Restyle Your World” saying good-bye to summer.

Blessings,
Jen

Great post. I loved reading this. My dad works at Home Depot and they are not allowed to accept tips from anyone. I’m assuming Lowe’s works the same way. Don’t feel bad!

*No, I wouldn’t tip the guy at Lowes. It was his job to cut all your boards :)

Love your new hallway.

Looks great – I have entry envy… and I concur- no need to tip the lowe’s guy – they are not allowed to accept gratuity. My husband used to work at Home Depot and that is their policy too. If in doubt at any store, just ask a manager and then if their not allowed to accept – tell them what a good job the employee did cuz it might help at raise time ;-)
